ABSTRACT
Stroke is one of the three most common causes of
disability and mortality in the world. Moreover, Brazil has the highest
Framingham risk scores among the Latin American countries. In a south Brazilian
city, it was found that women have more than 10% and men have more than 20%
risks of having a cardiovascular event within 10 years. In this context, we have
two types of risk factors, modifiable and nonmodifiable. With respect to the
modifiable risks, we can do something to change, and it is where the focus of
awareness campaigns is, but the knowledge about stroke is still scarce, even in
a population with levels of formal education above the average.
