ABSTRACT
Dementia affects >80% of the patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is more common in patients with PD than in the general population. In addition, cognitive dysfunction is a crucial predictor of institutional placement in patients with PD. The institutionalization of patients with PD is related to worsening cognition, loss of decision-making capacity, and a poor patient-caregiver relationship. Furthermore, there are important concerns regarding the economic burden of the healthcare system and institutional placement.
